The special reasons to book a family portrait photographer

The special reasons to book a family photographer, why family portraits have hidden benefits and the importance of photographing kids.

Family portrait sessions are so often pushed to the side because life is unrelentingly busy but this blog will have you excited about a family photoshoot and leave you saying, ‘yes, let’s do it’.

Consider your own childhood home for a moment. Were there many photos of your family on the walls? Do you have many photos of just you and your siblings together?

I recently looked through my childhood family photos and with the exception of Easter and Christmas shots (pjs and all) there isn’t a whole lot of photos of my brothers and I together. Sure, there’s some nice shots but family shots are few and far between.

As I held images from the past in my hands, I found myself recalling the exact moments and wondered why there weren’t more photos of all three of us together. I found lots of individual shots and images with only two out of the three of us.

My recent trip down memory lane revealed just how much I long to have lots of photos of my brothers and I all together as young children. Life is unpredictable and we don’t know what the future will bring. Sadly, my brother passed away a few years ago so photos are now the only tangible memories I have of him.

Seeing photos of all three of us evokes not only a strong sense of our relationship but also all of the good times and memories we made together.

There’s just something really powerful about the closeness I feel when I see myself in a photo with my brothers.

If you are reading this you are most likely a parent and as a parent myself, I know family photos are important to you. You mightn’t have considered this yet but family photos will be cherished by your children in years to come. They are time capsules that bring moments lived long ago back to life.

There are many reasons why family portraits are so important and as a Melbourne family photographer my top reasons are listed below.

So what are the hidden benefits of booking a family photography session?

Creating a sense of togetherness-

Family photo sessions reinforce the family unit along with creating a sense of security and belonging for children.

Each time your child walks into the home they will see photos that remind them they are loved and belong. No matter what is going on in the outside world their home becomes a safe haven of acceptance and a place to remind them whose they are and who they are.

Next time your childcare or school asks for a family photo to be sent in you’ll be able to provide a beautiful shot. How nice is it knowing your child can see a picture of your family during the day!? This wonderful initiative implemented by schools brings comfort and reassurance to both you and your young one.

Documenting everchanging and growing families-

Whether more family members are being added or your little ones are becoming tweens who will become teens. Your future self will thank you for making the choice to visually document your family throughout life’s milestones.

They allow time to stand still-

Feel like you’re in control even if it’s just for a day. There will never be a perfect time to have a photo session as busy families live in a constant juggle. Put simply, It’s chaos most of the time. But amongst the chaos you’ll never regret a family photography session.

If they’ve been on the to do list for a long time, just think how good you’ll feel when you tick them off the to do list. Plus you’ll finish the process with beautiful images to keep forever.

Create a fun tradition-

A yearly (or every other year) family photo session promotes a team spirit and can create greater unity for the family.

If you make family photos a tradition your children will look forward to the special day. You’ll find they reminisce about the years prior and build a catalogue of fun memories.

Anything that strengthens the bond of family is something we all want to partake in right?

An experience you can all participate in-

As parents we are always looking to take our children somewhere new or break up the routine with something different.

Family photography sessions can most certainly be described as an experience and an activity you can all do together. They are fun and every family always mentions how enjoyable the process was.

Gone are the days of the not so flattering, over styled, stiff posed family shots. Your family photo session will be all about having fun as you make it an experience your kids will remember (in a good way).
